Nepalese-American announces race for New York City Council

Nabaraj KC, a candidate of Nepalese descent, announced Feb. 28, 2021, he is joining the race for the New York City Council from District 19. The primaries are scheduled for June 8.

A Queens native who describes himself as a “Long-time activist and leader for change. Dedicated to bettering my community,” Nabaraj made the announcement at his campaign launch in College Point, in the presence of more than people there to show support for his candidacy. According to the press release, several elected officials were also present.

District 19 includes Auberndale, Bay Terrace, Bayside, Beechhurst, College Point, Douglaston, Flushing, Little Neck, Malba and Whitestone.

The Nepalese native of College Point, Queens, faces some tough competition.

Other candidates running for City Council from District 19 include political strategist Austin Shafran; Richard Lee (endorsed by Democratic Congressman Tom Suozzi), who served as budget director in the office of the Queens borough president and as legislative and budget director at the City Council; Vickie Paladino, a small business owner; former State Senator Tony Avella, and former NYPD police officer Adriana Aviles.

Nabaraj has a Masters Degree in Global Leadership from Duquesne University, has been an entrepreneur and realtor and a community. From 2019-2020 he served as president of the Rotary Club of New York, Queens. He is currently Assistant Governor for Rotary District 7255, according to his website nabaraj2021. He lives in College Point with his wife Ramila, and two sons.

New York City Council Member Fernando Cabrera spoke about Nabaraj’s service to the community.

“I have work(ed) with KC for several years as a leader that will represent residents of this council district. I look forward to working with him on(ce) he is elected. I wholeheartedly support Nabaraj KC’s candidacy as our next council member of the 19th district,” Cabrera is quoted saying in the press release.

Nabaraj’s platform is based on providing good education, working to provide affordable housing, job advancement, public safety, and healthy living, the press release said.
